Advanced Filtering for Oak E-Mail

Blocking Spam

The information below describes how to create custom e-mail filters. If you just want to keep spam and virus infected messages from reaching your Oak Inbox, visit our Spam and Virus Filtering page.

Advanced Filtering

Many e-mail clients, including Mulberry, Eudora, Netscape, and Outlook, allow you to create custom filters that move, modify or even delete messages based on information contained in those messages' headers. Common uses for such filters include:

  • Moving Listserv messages from your Inbox to separate folders
  • Deleting all messages from a specific sender
  • Moving a specific sender's messages from your Spam folder back to your Inbox
  • Filtering Spam using a higher or lower score than the main Oak Spam Filter uses
  • Filtering Spam if you are a POP user and do not wish to convert to IMAP

Custom filters can be very powerful; however, they also have some disadvantages:

  • Messages must be downloaded from the server before they can be filtered. This can be a liability for modem users and international travelers.
  • Custom filters are dependent on the program you used to create them. IE, a Mulberry-based filter will not work in Eudora or Netscape.
  • Webmail does not support custom filters.
